Why Do We Hunt Deer?
Heritage - Our
ancestors built this land and hunted to clothe and feed themselves.
Wars were waged over the right to hunt in the Ohio valley. The pioneering spirit lives
on in our appreciation of what the land provides.
Food - Today's
commercial meat is full of all sorts of stuff that God never intended it
to contain. When we harvest deer, we discover a source of meat
that's low in fat, low in cholesterol, and hasn't been chemically
manipulated by the commercial industry at all.
Sport - Okay, let's go
there. We don't need to hunt deer for meat, and we're not struggling
for our lives in the wilderness trying to colonize a new world. We
get that. But hunting gives good friends a chance to do something
together, gives families a tradition to pass down, and gives the average
person a new appreciation of, and an urge for, stewardship of the land.
Respect - Deer are
prolific. If you'll pardon the expression, deer can breed like
rabbits. If there's a doe in estrus, there's a darn good chance
she's going to have a fawn in the Spring. A single buck will go from
doe to doe. Eventually, there will be so many that there won't be
enough habitat or food for the herd. The weaker deer will tragically
die of starvation.
I don't really want to talk
about the obvious argument, car accidents, but it's a fact. The more
deer we have running around, the more car/deer incidents are going to
happen. Of the nearly 12-million cars in the state of Ohio, around
30,000 of them hit deer annually. This drives up the costs of
insurance, causes a lot of injuries, and ...click here
for the real tragedy...
