To the folks at StopTheNRA.com I am a staunch supporter of gun rights.
I need you to understand that we law-abiding gun owners will not stand
for any attempt to infringe on those rights. I hunt, I shoot at
targets, and I'm responsible. I encourage my children to enjoying gun
sports and teach them gun responsibility.
The people that shouldn't have guns, and the people who don't teach
responsibility, and the people you're trying to target with this push
will be inoculated against any "reasonable" gun laws because they just
flat don't give a damn. The only people who will suffer are the people
that you should have no fear of.
Stop the NRA? Why? They're just looking out for my rights, and trying
to stop people like you from enacting laws that aren't going to make a
bit of difference in the amount of gun violence, but will instead make
responsible gun owners dislike groups like yours even more.
The ban on automatic weapons in Columbus means nothing to those who get
those weapons and use them in gun related crimes. If it mattered to
them, they wouldn't commit the crime in the first place, whether they
had a gun or not. Jail doesn't matter to them. The death penalty
doesn't matter to them. The "punks" are no different from the Islamic
zealots who blow themselves up to kill the innocent or to send a
message. They believe that the end result is inevitable, so you might
as well build up some martyrdom on your way to the slammer, or the
electric chair, or to Allah if that be the case.
To say that guns kill people is to say that cars kill people. More
people die in cars annually than as a result of gun violence. Should we
outlaw certain kinds of cars? Why haven't we outlawed the sale of
cigarettes? Sure, it's illegal to smoke them in some places, but as a
coincidence, it's also illegal to shoot a gun in certain places. Law
abiding citizens will smoke elsewhere. "Punks" will smoke wherever they
please no matter what law is in place, and eventually they will be
caught and prosecuted - just like the people who don't obey gun laws.
To say that guns kill people is to say that a spoon made Rosie O'Donnell
fat. Her girth is a choice she made, a bad choice. Normal people can
wield spoons responsibly. Should we outlaw spoons because some people
use them incorrectly? Obesity is the number one health problem in
America, so this shouldn't be taken lightly.
Do you see how nonsensical it is to spend money and waste time prying
guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens? Rather than pass new gun
laws which hurt the innocent, why not take that angst you're feeling and
ask lawmakers to more strictly enforce the laws we have?
