Harrison
State Forest
Just off state Route 9 between Jewett and Cadiz, 1,344-acre Harrison State
Forest provides archery hunters with plenty of whitetails and room to hunt
them. This Harrison County hotspot is primarily former strip-mine land
with most of its unstripped acreage on the ridges or in the valleys.
Two reforestation projects were completed
in 1992 and 1993. Over 100,000 trees were planted to create prime habitat
for deer and other species.
Two campgrounds are available at Harrison State Forest. Fire rings,
drinking water, vault latrines as well as several miles of hiking trails
are available within the forest.
For additional information on hunting or camping at Harrison State Forest
contact the forest office, 1888 East High Avenue, New Philadelphia OH
44663; or call (216) 339-2205.
For additional information on the deer management and archery hunting
available in northeastern Ohio, contact the Wildlife District Three
office, 912 Portage Lakes Drive, Akron OH 44319; or call (330) 644-2293.
Jockey
Hollow
Dedicated in May 2003, Jockey Hollow is a 3,500-acre state wildlife area.
Located in Harrison and Belmont counties, Jockey Hollow State Wildlife
Area includes a diverse patchwork of forest and grasslands, and features
several small ponds. The property includes land within Athens and
Moorefield townships in the southeastern corner of Harrison County and
Flushing Township in Belmont County. The area is home to
white-tailed deer, wild turkey, grouse, squirrels, rabbits and river
otters. Ponds that dot Jockey Hollow offer anglers the opportunity to
catch largemouth bass and a variety of panfish.
Jockey Hollow is currently
the beneficiary of a habitat improvement project spearheaded by Whitetails
Unlimted and the ODNR/Division of Wildlife. Blight resistent
chestnut trees are among the seedlings being planted in an effort to
improve deer, turkey and other wildlife populations.
A former mining area,
around 100 acres of the area is still closed off to the public while
mining operations continue there.
