Athens County is located in
the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau region of Ohio. It features steep,
rugged hills, with typical relief of 150 to 400 feet, deeply dissected by
stream valleys. Most of Athens County is within the Hocking River
watershed, with smaller areas in the Shade River and Raccoon Creek
watersheds.

Public Lands
Burr Oak State Park (Click here for link)
The 664
acre lake is well known for its catches of largemouth bass, crappie,
bluegill and catfish. Hunting is permitted in designated areas of the park
and in the adjacent Wayne National Forest and wildlife areas.
A 10HP limit for boats is in effect on Burr Oak Lake. Five launch ramps provide access to the lake. Boat rentals, fuel and seasonal dock rentals are offered at the marina.

Fox Lake Wildlife Area
Public
hunting on 421 acres, public fishing on 48 acres of water. Lake has
fish shelters. Electric motors only on the water. 614-594-2211
Gifford State Forest
Public
hunting area within 320 acres. Backpacking, pond fishing (1 acre)
ski trails. 614-554-3177
Lake
Snowden Recreation Area
130 acres of lake fishing (no wake boating), boat ramps & docks.
Entire park is 597 acres, full of camp sites, picnic areas, swimming,
playground, volleyball and other family recreation. 614-698-6373
Strouds Run State Park
Encompasses 2445
acres. Public hunting areas and shooting range. The 161 acre
lake has a 10HP limit for boats in
effect. Boat launch ramps. Canoe rentals, ice skating, swimming and picnic

State Park includes the
Riddle State Nature Preserve
(which has deer overpopulation woes).

Zaleski State Forest
Public Hunting, Public Pond Fishing.
Roadside camping permitted during Deer gun & muzzleloading and Turkey gun
seasons only. Shooting range on site.
Encompasses 26,825 acres.
Only approximately 1 acre is water. Part of forest extends into
Vinton County.
